With over 200 businesses, employing over 2,500 people, the Market supplies 40% of fresh fruit & vegetables eaten outside of the home in London and is used by 75% of London florists.
It also boasts the highest concentration of wholesale distributors in the country and has a number of companies specialising in other foods such as: dairy, meat, fish, wine and ice. Most of the companies on site are small and medium-sized enterprises and many are family run, who pride themselves on exceptional service levels and flexibility.
The Fruit & Vegetable Wholesalers
NCGM is the largest market in the UK for quality fresh produce. Thousands of tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables from all corners of the world are delivered to the Market each day.During the course of the year some 160 different types of fruit are available and over 180 varieties of vegetables. From samphire to mangoes, mizuna to courgette flowers NCGM has the pick of the world’s best produce.In line with national trends, some 70% of the produce sold at NCGM is imported, however, there is an increasing focus on locally sourced produce. NCGM is dedicated to supporting British growers and driving more local produce into the food service sector.
Fruit & Vegetable Wholesale Distributors
NCGM has the largest number of wholesale foodservice distributors on one site in the country all serving London, the South East and beyond. Being on the site of the UK’s leading wholesale market these companies have direct access to the finest produce from around the world and, of course, the UK.
NCGM is often the launch-pad for new varieties and is always in the forefront of new food trends. With temperature-controlled warehouses and delivery vehicles as standard, most companies offer a second delivery to their customers every day. Many offer an extended product range including frozen, dairy, morning goods and dried goods while some also slice, dice, chop, peel, juice, mix and prepare produce.
Flower Market
NCGM is also home to the UK’s only dedicated flower and plant wholesale market. The Flower Market offers an unrivalled variety of flowers, foliages, plants, sundries and interior decorations. The best of seasonal flowers and foliages from around the world is displayed alongside the pick of British grown product.
Around 75% of florists in London visit for daily orders, top-ups or as their exclusive source of supply. Retail florists, event florists, party organisers, interior designers and contract florists alike all rely on the Flower Market for their floristry needs. A growing number of contract florists are also based at the Market.
Other Food Companies
NCGM is not just about fruit, vegetables and flowers. There are some 20 companies specialising in other foods, the choice is extensive and includes: ice and ice sculptures, cheese, meat, fish, sauces, dairy, wine and frozen desserts.
NCGM is also an incubator for new start-ups with companies growing from small beginnings to award winning enterprises.
Future developments
They are working on plans to provide a new Market on the Nine Elms site. The Garden at New Covent Garden Market will see a modern new Market built alongside other food and flower related facilities and activities as part of our vision to create a new food and flower centre for London. The Garden will also include new homes, shops and offices.
